Long live the party. Or how the region of Murcia really celebrates

Murcia is a region that is best known not by monuments or advertising folders, but by fiestas. It is they that tell the most about the local rhythm of life, history and mentality of the inhabitants. And what is important, they are not an addition to everyday life, but a natural part of it.
Holidays in Murcia take place practically all year round. They are colorful, loud, sometimes touching, and sometimes completely frivolous. They are united by one thing. The whole city always participates in them, regardless of age or origin.
Carnival in Águilas, or chaos at its best
If one wants to understand how Spaniards manage to celebrate without complexes, the Carnival of Águilas is the perfect starting point. It is one of the most spectacular carnival festivities in Spain, full of fancy costumes, music and satire.
For two weeks, the city lives to the rhythm of parades, contests and street celebrations. Characteristic are the symbolic “fight” of Don Carnal with Doña Cuaresma and the famous Paper Costume Contest, where the craftsmanship is more impressive than many feather and sequin costumes. Carnival has two faces. Elegant, daytime and lively, nocturnal, more spontaneous.
A Holy Week That Looks Different Than Anywhere Else
In Murcia, Easter is not homogeneous. Each city experiences it in its own way, and three of them have gained international prominence.
In Cartagena the processions are precise, almost theatrical, with a clear rivalry between two historical fraternities. Perfectly synchronized marches, rich floral decorations and a nocturnal atmosphere of concentration, difficult to compare with other regions of Spain, attract attention.
Lorca bets on spectacularity. Holy Week is reminiscent of a monumental historical-religious spectacle, with horse-drawn carriages, silk and gold embroidery and the rivalry of the White and Blue Brotherhoods. It is one of the few places where processions are both a liturgy and a spectacle.
Murcia itself, on the other hand, impresses with its Baroque. The processions with Salzillo sculptures turn the city into an open-air gallery, and the nazarenos distributing sweets make the sacrum intertwine with everyday life here in a particularly natural way.

Spring in Murcia. Huerta takes to the streets
After Easter, Murcia explodes with colors. Bando de la Huerta is a celebration of pride in the agricultural traditions of the region, which has been called the “garden of Europe” for centuries. The streets are filled with traditional costumes, sleds, food and music. This is a joyful, open and very local fiesta.
A few days later, the Entierro de la Sardina follows, that is, the spectacular farewell to the carnival. A parade of gigantos y cabezudos, fiery hachones, acrobats, demons and samba groups turns the center of Murcia into a vibrant, pulsating carnival full of color and noise. The funeral of Sardinia is the finale of the Fiestas de Primavera and the symbolic end of the fun period.
The uniqueness of this holiday lies in the fact that it takes place already after Easter. Its origins date back to 1850, when a group of students decided once again, contrary to the rules, to indulge in the joy of the fiesta. The festivities continue until dawn and end with the burning of a huge figure of Sardinia in the Plaza de San Francisco.
Caravaca de la Cruz and the legendary Caballos del Vino
One of the most unique events in all of Spain is the celebration of the Fiesta de la Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz. The holiday of the Moors and Christians refers to the times of the border of Christian Castile and Muslim Granada.
The culmination of the celebration is the race of Caballos del Vino, or “wine horses”, adorned with richly embroidered capes. According to legend, the tradition dates back to the 13th century, when the besieged city was saved by supplying wine instead of water. Today, the sound of galloping horses, crowds of residents dressed in white and red and huge emotions create an atmosphere that is difficult to compare with anything else. It is not surprising that the event was included in the list of intangible heritage of UNESCO.
Summer and autumn under the sign of music and history
Murcia sounds like music in the summer. From the jazz festival in San Javier, through the international La Mar de Músicas in Cartagena, to the August flamenco competition in La Unión, recognized as one of the most important in the world.
In autumn, Cartagena is transferred to the times of the Carthaginians and Romans. For more than a dozen days, the city becomes a historical scene with parades, battles and reconstructions of events from the period of the Second Punic War. This is one of those holidays that residents plan throughout the year.
Why It All Matters
Fiestas are much more than colorful costumes and dancing. It is the way in which the inhabitants of the Region of Murcia transmit history, values and memory to subsequent generations. You can see in them the idea of the peaceful coexistence of cultures, religions and traditions that have permeated this area for centuries.
It is to such nuances of the local mentality that it is worth paying attention to when planning an investment or a new stage of life in Spain. Fiestas show how much Murcia lives in the off-season, how strong its identity is and how history, everyday life and community are naturally intertwined here. And perhaps that's why this region stays with people for longer.
